Molokai Hawaii – Balanced between Man and Nature

Molokai has always been considered a place of magic from very early times. It was created when two major volcanoes pushed their way out of the Pacific Ocean some million years or more ago. Over time, part of what had developed fell into the ocean as a result, leaving behind the mighty sea cliffs that are renowned in Molokai. These sea cliffs are the highest in the entire United States.
Molokai is one of the smallest of the six main Hawaiian Islands. Strangely enough, the island as small as it is, has two different legendary sections. In 2007, a panel of 522 experts in sustainable tourism and destination stewardship reviewed 111 selected human-inhabited islands and archipelagos around the world.
Molokai ranked 10th among the 111 locales. The survey cited Molokai’s pristine, breathtaking tropical landscape, environmental stewardship, rich and deep Hawaiian traditions, and visitor-friendly culture. The neighbor islands Hawaii, Kauai, Maui and Oahu, ranked 50, 61, 81 and 104, respectively. Tahiti ranked 57.Long ago settlers migrated from the South Pacific to Molokai. They migrated here in hopes of seeking wisdom and advice. There is a rich sense of spirituality and religious history among the natives who still hold very strongly to what their ancestors stood for.
The views of Molokai are breathtaking to say the least, regardless of whichever time of the year that you decide to visit. If you go in winter, however, you can see the mating and breeding of the whales. Hiking here will captivate you. The beaches are breathtaking, and if you snorkel the underwater views will bewilder you. Like in many parts of California it will be sunny and warm, just what you want on a relaxing vacation.
Molokai has many natural wonders including some black sand beaches, rain forests, ancient temples, and numerous Kukui tree blossoms. These beautiful blossoms are the islands official flower. Molokai hosts a special place that is a uniquely shaped stone known as the stone of fertility. Some natives of the island still believe that if a woman spends the night on that rock she will become fertile and become pregnant.
You’d be hard pressed to find another place that is comparable to Molokai yet one you could actually spend a vacation on. No fast food restaurants or traffic lights, nothing but miles of natural beauty to enjoy. If you want to indulge in snorkel, sail, dive, swim, bask in the sun, or just relax in the tranquil sounds of nature, it is best to stay on the east side of the island. Molokai gives you a sense of inner peace and tranquility.
This Hawaiian island is not the vacation spot for everyone and that is how the locals intend to keep it. Thousands of stories have been told by people who vacationed in Molokai and said they had never been treated nicer. There are numerous resorts, hotels, condos, and beachfront homes for rent. Most of your choices will leave you dealing directly with the owner as most businesses are family owned and operated. The choice that you make will determine which side of the island you will visit.
The people of Molokai are very spiritual and believe that their island is protected by spiritual powers. The history of Molokai will be explained to you so that you can better understand that Molokai was originally established as a place of refuge for those with leprosy, hence why the Father Damien tours are so very popular among Hawaiian visitors.
Visitors can reach this secluded area which was at one time nearly impossible to reach by mule. Tours are provided. The natives will be sure to inform you that a goddess of Molokai is the one who gave way to the idea of hula.
Molokai is not fast paced at all and the perfect place to visit if you need to relax and unwind away from the everyday hustle and bustle like so many other places. Molokai is referred to by the native Hawaiians as the best kept secret. Papohaku Beach is the best beach in Hawaii and it is home to Molokai. There is plenty to do on this beach that will keep you busy for days.

Don’t misunderstand, Molokai still offers luxurious beaches, romantic hideaways, and all of the water activities that the other islands offer but Molokai just offers them in a different way. There are ample land adventures and tours, charter fishing, cascading waterfalls, and gorgeous beaches.
If five star hotels and sumptuous restaurants are what you have in mind then Molokai is not the place for you. What makes Molokai so unique is that there is not one traffic light, no tall buildings, no nightclubs, no malls, a tropical paradise that is unimaginable.
The touch of ancestry and tranquility that is Molokai is hard to measure. The natives are very hospitable and stand firmly in their beliefs which they are more than willing to share with the many tourists that visit each year. They love to sit around and share stories of years ago and why Molokai is unwilling to compromise their ways.
While you are visiting Molokai you will be able to visit the other islands by helicopter ride or by boat but, if you’re like most others it’s almost a certainty you will want to return to Molokai to unwind and relax. There are very few other places like this you can visit that can cover virtually everything a visitor might want on a vacation which is why this choice of islands is not only glamorous but an educational experience as well.
Be sure to visit each of the beaches that Molokai has to offer because each one has something different to bring to the table. Whether or not it is a family orientated beach with camping facilities or a private beach that allows you to just lie back on a blanket and soak up the sun’s rays, it is a great destination for a much welcomed vacation.Visitors can spend hours just sitting and talking with the locals about the history and stories about this island that has never been touched by city life. Molokai offers most of the luxuries of the bigger and more developed islands but just refuses to industrialize or compromise the way that they live and their beliefs and cultures.
The island does have one hospital, a police station, a library, a fire department, and at least one bank. So while it may not offer everything that you could ever want it is sure to meet all of your needs. Molokai is magical and pristine; there is no place, especially within the United States that could ever match this most gratifying island of Molokai. The National Register of Historic Places in Hawaii lists several places on the island.
Watching the sunsets and sunrises, the whales and the visitors enjoying the water activities can occupy much of your time. Molokai will offer you one of the most relaxed and beautiful vacations that you could ever imagine.
